Rather out of the blue we decided to go away for a week in early August. That was even before almost the whole month of July had seen us all being washed away here at home as the jet stream stayed stubbornly to the south of us and one slow-moving low pressure area after another passed over us, bringing incessant rain, blustery winds and cool temperatures for the time of year.
Meanwhile the continent of Europe was generally sizzling in temperatures of over 40C and wildfires were running riot on the Greek islands of Rhodes, Evia and Corfu.
We asked Julie, our travel advisor, to see what she could come up with and she found us a hotel just round the corner from Los Gigantes, a place we know well which is adults-only with every room having a sea view.

To the right you can see the Acantilados de los Gigantes - "The Cliffs of the Giants". Basalt cliffs, the first nation inhabitants of the Canaries, the Guanches, called them "The Wall of Hell". Some are up to 500 metres high.
